Finding love virtually…good luck!
(seen on Terra Nova)
Ok, I make a bit of fun, but really, in my mind it adds whole extra layer of complications to try to find love in the virtual world. If you’re dating in the real world, at least you can maybe get a feel for a person, shake hands to see if they have hairy palms, look in their eyes to see if the crazy is there or not and see if they stare at your chest the entire date (I can’t tell you how many woman do that to me).
In the virtual world? Well, you can Google them and…well, that’s about it. If they aren’t running some sort of website or something doesn’t pop up on search, you’re really dealing with what they say. And people are liars. Especially online. Of course, I say that from a married point of view. So all the dating I do is online. :P.
But, if you must date the virtual people (remember, if their picture looks like a model, it probably is) and you do it in MMORPGs, here’s some really interesting and straight forward tips from someone completely not qualified to give advice on the subject (though I think it’s pretty good stuff, though I disagree with best way to meet someone theory).
Would you be shocked if I told you that not only are game-spawned relationships common, but I’d also claim they are one of the best ways to get to know someone, especially if you are a big city person in the western culture where people are so careful, picky and paranoid when it comes to romance.

- Couple encounters a treasure chest in the middle of the woods. Within, is one of the best weapons in the game, something they’ve both been needing for a very long time. Signs of greed / graciousness? Maturity in priorities, what matters more, making their honey happy or the stupid virtual weapon?
- Couple are confronted by some rude idiots in a tavern (people tend to instigate conflict easier in a game). A perfect opportunity to watch how intelligently / aggressively / cowardly / valorously the other reacts. Please note that there are no right reactions, it’s all a matter of taste. So while one person would cringe at the other telling the intruders off aggressively, another may beam with pride and find it very sexy.
What Would Matt Do: Not trust anyone online as far as you can throw them (doesn’t mean much in this context, but you get my drift).
