I like Ars Technica. Not only do they often have interesting interviews, they also have a really cool name. Can't get much better than that.
Ben Kuchera (some guy) went their offices recently and posted the following interview. The gist of the interview? Hooked up side by side, on the same TV, it's really hard to see a visual difference between the 360 and the PS3. Even though the PS3 doesn't do hardware resolution scaling…or scaling at all. The real advantage the 360 has? The year head start:
The same menu is brought up, and I see that the 360 is upscaling the game into 1080p. Ana is doing a good job, as the game looks fantastic on that display running at that resolution. I find Gears of War a more impressive game graphically; it uses every trick and special effect you can think of to give you some stunning scenes. Of course, this is also a second-generation game and Epic had a very close relationship with Microsoft through the development process—a level of support most developers don't enjoy. It's not a fair comparison at the moment in terms of looking at the power of both systems; we're going to have to wait until the PS3 gets some second-generation games in a year or so. I raise that point.
"Right, but by then we'll have Halo 3. We'll be on the third–generation games. We hope to always be a little bit ahead," Henson counters.
Seen FF12? It's amazing. Seen GoW? It's also pretty damn spiffy. How long did it take the PS2 to get games out of their hardware that looked like that? Years and years. So if the Microsoft can keep their lead in terms of graphics, they will always have that solid advantage. But can they? Can they compete against the likes of the power house upcoming games for the PS3? Can they make people forget how much they loved their PS2? Well, it isn't like Sony isn't working hard to help them with their blundering around like a drunk wildebeest.
As Mr. Kuchera says, it'll be a really interesting few years either way.
UPDATE: I just saw this article linked on qt3. While I like the idea, I guarantee I don't want to shell out a full system purchase price again to get an HDMI port and 120gb. So annoying.
What Would Matt Do: I damn sure won't be buying a PS3 yet. I wasn't an early adopter of the 360 and I sure as hell won't be buying the first generation PS3. That's crazy talk.
