The Secret, entirely awesome sounding, World.

So if you read this very short talk about The Secret World and check out the attached concept art, and you’re not 10, you might be thinking, this game sounds pretty damn spiffy. And don’t get me wrong, I’m right there with you. Except well, it’s Funcom. You remember, Funcom, right? The Anarchy Online guys. The crazy bastards whose MMO you really wanted to like but you just couldn’t quite get into and around the bajillion annoying problems.

Developer and publisher Funcom has announced initial details behind The Secret World, an upcoming PC and Xbox 360 MMO set in the modern day and revolving around mythology and conspiracy theory. The Secret World merges a contemporary setting with supernatural elements, allowing players to uncover the truth behind legends, myths, secret societies, magic, and more.

The Secret World springs from the imagination of director Ragnar Tornquist, creator of legendary adventure game The Longest Journey (PC) and last year’s sequel Dreamfall (Xbox, PC), as well as story writer on Funcom’s MMO Anarchy Online (PC). “We started envisioning this contemporary online world more than ten years ago, and as the years passed the ideas grew and improved,” explained Tornquist. “We always wanted a different kind of online world, something scary and contemporary, something deeper and closer to our reality. Our goal now is to create a detailed world where players feel empowered and part of something big, something mystical and epic.”

Then again, on the plus side, it’s being written by super game story teller, Tornquist. You might remember him from The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Though you probably don’t because they are Adventure games. I know, right.

Biggest problems with his previous games? Combat sucked. That’s going to be a killer in a MMO world. Hopefully he’s getting help with that.

Then again the work on Conan has looked promising so far, so maybe they are onto something. And yet, Conan hasn’t been released yet and though it looks good in previews, just like anything else, 99% of all things are crap. And this is definitely has the potential to be in that 99% camp.

I’m so torn. Know what I really like though? The world of darkness sound to it all, but without vampires. Like the world within the world sort of deal the Matrix had going on. If they can write that well and let players play the abnormals in a normalish world, that will freaking own.

What Would Matt Do:
I’ll hold out hope. Hopefully.
