I knew there was a reason I stalked Lum, er read Scott’s blog. He linked an interview done on him at ten ton hammer which I started skimming after learning he won’t talk about his current game at all. As a matter of fact, I had stopped reading, was going to close the window and happened to read the last question and answer:
Ten Ton Hammer: Is there anything else you’d like to tell the Ten Ton Hammer readers and Lum the Mad fans?
Scott: Be more demanding. Don’t accept mediocrity. Don’t accept games that try to deliver less polish. WoW has set the standards that we have to meet, and if games don’t meet it they will fail and deserve to fail. That standard has now been set and we have to meet it.
It’s kinda like the Braveheart cry for "Freedom!" Well, maybe not quite as good, but it’s good. Don’t accept mediocrity. Well duh. That’s the principle this whole site is built on (no, not the suffering of baby seals as you might have thought). That’s why I whine and moan and point and laugh at horrible game design and the failings of MMOs and other games. I want games to be better. I want developers to learn from the past, both the successes and failings of those before them. I’d like to think that if I wail and gnash my teeth enough, the Wild Things will listen, but who knows.
What Would Matt Do: Ok, I admit it, the site is really just for me. If anyone else ever takes anything useful from it, I might have to pull the plug. Or, conversely, setup google ads and make the big bucks! ;)
