Modder makes good
I wanted to title this write up, Local Guy Makes It Big, since he’s one of us, the internet denizens that play and love games. Doesn’t really fit since I can’t really name internet gamers home town though. That being said, approximately 312,541of you guys bought his mod. In the process you made Gary a pretty penny, though not quite enough to retire on:
I kind of expected that it would sell a big number of copies for the first day, then sell very few after that. I was kind of wrong, because over the next 2 years it went on to sell 312,541 copies. Which has totally knocked my socks off.
GMod hasn’t just given me financial stability, It’s also made me a lot more experienced in c++. I learned how game engines are meant to work.
You did get him some stability financially and sounds like he’s really enjoying his work. I can’t think of a better success story for modders.
Congratulations Garry and his team. That’s great that you guys made some money off what was probably started as a hobby because you love it. That’s what makes modding good even when 99.9% of mods stink. The guys that are successful enough to keep doing what they love, making games.
What Would Matt Do: Watch this space my game announcement soon. It’s called Mr. Awesome and it’s based on my life story. It’s going to knock your socks off…as soon as I get a sound guy and a couple of artists…
P.S. – much love to Valve for enabling Gary and every other modder out there. I can’t talk enough about how awesome Valve is. And I can’t stop playing their games. Damn bastards.
